Some great tattoos for all the great mothers out there! Happy Mothers Day!
The classic “mom” tattoo is an American traditional heart with the word “mom”. Nowadays there are many more versions of this, done in colour, black and grey, and many different styles including American traditional, neo traditional, dotwork, blackwork, cross stitch, and realism. Now there is also more than just the heart as a design. There can be flowers, birds, landscapes, and more meaningful pieces that really relate to a specific mom.
Jade Harper is a tattoo artist and owner of House of the Rising Sun in Winnipeg. Jade does mainly blackwork American traditional pieces, but has been doing more bold colourful works recently as well. She’s also very well known for her cowboy and cowboy girl pieces.
Due to the current pandemic (April 2020) Jade and other artists cannot tattoo temporarily, but she is still selling paintings. Check out her Instagram to do so, linked above.
Jade has a large amount of her own tattoo flash to choose from, and she also takes ideas, and will make changes to her own flash to suit the client’s needs.
Jade focuses on being inclusive in her shop, and is proud to be the owner of the (currently) only queer owned and operated shop in Winnipeg. She acknowledges that tattoo shops can be a (sometimes) intimidating place, particularly for those in the LGBTQ community, as well as people of colour, so she’s created the space to be a welcoming place for all.
Jade is a must-see artist in Winnipeg if you’re passing through, or a local looking for someone great!
In the Christian faith Mary is the mother of Jesus, also called mother of God.
In the story of Christmas Mary is visited by an angel and told she will give birth to the son of God. Jesus is then born in a barn, amongst animals and wisemen. Throughout the bible Mary is constantly seen at her son’s side during his soteriological journey.
Images of Mary often show her praying, or mourning the death of Jesus, sometimes crying tears of blood. She is also often seen wearing blue, crown of 12 stars, pregnant, or surrounded by roses.
Artists such as Michelangelo and Botticelli, and now, tattoo artists all around the world.
In tattoo form Mary is often done in black and grey realism, photo realism, American traditional, or neo traditional.
Dr. Who is a science fiction show that has been produced by the BBC since 1963. It is a cult favorite show around the world that features, aliens, robots, time travel, and space exploits.
The Doctor (various versions), the Tardis, space whales, Rose, and various villains are popular designs for Dr. Who tattoos. Dr. Who tattoos are often done in American traditional style, neo traditional, realism, black and grey, and watercolor.
Fans are extremely dedicated to the show, which is evident from their brilliant tattoos, conventions, pop up shops, cinema screenings, and even symphonic tours around the world.
A Game of Thrones is the first novel in “A Song of Ice and Fire”, a series by George R. R. Martin. It was published in 1996 and won multiple awards. The following books were equally as popular.
The HBO TV show came out in 2011 and it was an immediate hit with fans around the world; also winning multiple awards over the years. The books and shows diverse characters and fantastical world make for great tattoos, as well as hundreds of memorable quotes. Here are some of my favorite Game of Thrones tattoos!
Stranger Things is the popular Netflix show that came out this year, 2016. Featuring a great cast of Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Finn Wolfhard, Millie Bobby Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Natalie Dyer, and Charlie Heaton, the show was an instant hit with fans. The show takes place in the 1980’s and pays homage to 80’s pop culture such as, Steven Spielberg, Stephen King, John Carpenter, George lucas, and others. The sci-fi horror show follows the disappearance of a young boy in a small town. The boys friends, brother, and mother, separately discover that something is wrong with the disappearance. A telekinetic girl named Eleven is found by the young boys, and helps them find their friend. Friendship, otherworldliness, and a need to belong are strong themes in the show, and make for great tattoos. Fun characters, an unpredictable plot, and a distinct nostalgic factor also make this show appealing straight away.
Considering the show has only been out a short while, the immediate fan base is quite strong, and of course, with that, comes tattoos. These next four are all done by pop iconography master Matt Daniels at Studio IX in Manchester, UK.
