A number of people have brought to my attention that Max Rathbone has a large number of sexual assault and abuse allegations against him. Whether they are true or not is not for me to decide, but the number of women making claims against him is outstanding. Hence I have deleted photos of his work and will not be including him in future articles.
If you or someone you know has been abused by a tattoo artist, please say something. It’s an industry that unfortunately all too often allows men to prey on innocent people that are in a vulnerable position.

The Deathly Hallows are three magical objects from the Harry Potter series that together make up a triangular design that when worn shows you are a believer. The three objects are the Elder Wand, a wand made to be unbeatable, The Resurrection Stone, which brings back the dead, and the Cloak of Invisibility which as it says, renders the user completely invisible. The cloak forms a triangle, the stone is a circle within the triangle, and the wand is a straight line within the triangle and circle.
The story of the Deathly Hallows is first told in the seventh book. In the story, Death created each of these three items, and gave them to the three Peverell brothers who had outsmarted Death by crossing a river that usually claimed lives. These items were their rewards for outsmarting him. The two eldest brothers had requested the wand and the stonem but both met grisly deaths due to the nature of their magical items. The wand caused Antioch Peverell to gloat, leading him to be killed in his sleep and have the wand stolen, while the stone caused Cadmus Peverell to take his own life after bringing his late wife back from the dead, as she was unable to be happy in the land of the living again. The youngest brother Ignotus Peverell requested Death’s own cloak, and used it to avoid him until he was ready for Death. Ignotus passed the cloak on to his son and from there greeted Death “like an old friend”. This cloak is the very same on that Harry had passed down to him.
Lovers of the Harry Potter series, whether the books or films, have often gotten the Deathly Hallows as a tattoo to show their love of magic. The Deathly Hallows symbol is often paired with quotes or other images such as flowers, Hogwarts, magical creatures, spells, potions, and people’s patronuses.
Pokémon is a Japanese video game, card game, and television show, that was started in 1996 and is now one of the most popular forms of children’s entertainment in the world. Pokémon features fantastic creatures that need to be caught, trained, and battled against other people. In the video games, people can now even battle and trade with their friends, making it more of a community than it previously was.
Fans of Pokémon are very dedicated, and some show that dedication by having their favorite Pokémon tattooed on themselves.
The majority of these tattoos are from the first and second generation of Pokémon, but some people who are fans of the more recent games and generations will get the newer Pokémon tattooed.
These tattoos are usually done in a new school or neo-traditional form as the subjects are cartoons and are bright and colourful.
Pin-up girl tattoos have been a popular design since around 1890 when magazines started to feature photos of scantily clad women. These women were usually famous actresses or models. These images became even more popular during world war one and two when men went off to war and wanted to carry a picture of their sweetheart (or favorite actress) on their arm for good luck or as a reminder of what awaits them back home. Eventually these designs were seen as crude, but now men and women wear them with pride. Women in particular often get them as a sign of their feminist beliefs of empowering women.
Pin-ups started in the American traditional style, and that is usually the style people still go for today, although more people have been getting pin-ups in black and grey, neo-traditional, and realism along with American traditional.
In the Christian faith Mary is the mother of Jesus, also called mother of God.
In the story of Christmas Mary is visited by an angel and told she will give birth to the son of God. Jesus is then born in a barn, amongst animals and wisemen. Throughout the bible Mary is constantly seen at her son’s side during his soteriological journey.
Images of Mary often show her praying, or mourning the death of Jesus, sometimes crying tears of blood. She is also often seen wearing blue, crown of 12 stars, pregnant, or surrounded by roses.
Artists such as Michelangelo and Botticelli, and now, tattoo artists all around the world.
In tattoo form Mary is often done in black and grey realism, photo realism, American traditional, or neo traditional.
Stranger Things is the popular Netflix show that came out this year, 2016. Featuring a great cast of Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Finn Wolfhard, Millie Bobby Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Natalie Dyer, and Charlie Heaton, the show was an instant hit with fans. The show takes place in the 1980’s and pays homage to 80’s pop culture such as, Steven Spielberg, Stephen King, John Carpenter, George lucas, and others. The sci-fi horror show follows the disappearance of a young boy in a small town. The boys friends, brother, and mother, separately discover that something is wrong with the disappearance. A telekinetic girl named Eleven is found by the young boys, and helps them find their friend. Friendship, otherworldliness, and a need to belong are strong themes in the show, and make for great tattoos. Fun characters, an unpredictable plot, and a distinct nostalgic factor also make this show appealing straight away.
Considering the show has only been out a short while, the immediate fan base is quite strong, and of course, with that, comes tattoos. These next four are all done by pop iconography master Matt Daniels at Studio IX in Manchester, UK.
Dale Sarok is a tattoo artist out of Vida Loca Tattoo in Bolton, UK. Dale does black and grey work, making great use of dead space on client’s skin. His work is incredibly detailed, and often features whimsical creatures, various religious imagery, and geometric shapes. He is also an illustrator and often uses quite large canvases for his work. He has done album artwork for the band “Counting Days”.
Some incredible mythological creatures. A great mix of macabre and elegance in these pieces.
Dale also does the occasional portrait piece. Any fans of “The Adams Family”?
Two full sleeves featuring skeletons, skulls, and lots of geometric work. These must have taken a very long time to do with all the detail put into them.
Myself and many others look forward to seeing what Dale will bring to 2016!
